La Zoar 1950 (p.12)
Description
[corresponds to page 10 of La Zoar, 1950]
Senior Class History
In September, 1946, fourteen "Green Freshies" started to high school at Galena.
Mrs. Hacker, who was our home room teacher, taught General Business. Miss Helen
Sproul taught English and Music. Mr. Souders, superintendent, taught Civics and
Occupations. Mr. Hoke taught General Science. The students and teachers got along quite
well together, and these Freshmen had a lot of fun along with work during their first year
of high school.
We had several activities such as: sales tax parties, scrap drives, Freshman Play,
"Hillbilly Sue:, etc.
When our Sophomore Year started, we had ten members. Laura Jane Denty and
Richard Hazelwood moved, Robert Wingo joined the U. S. Army, and James Chapin got
killed. During this year we had another play, "Spring Fever", along with many other
activities.
On September 7, 1948, a small class of nine entered the Junior Class to face our
home room teacher, Mr. Henry Furniss. This year was one of our most progressive,
we think. We took part in the Hallowe'en Carnival, had several scrap and paper drives,
saved sales tax stamps, and of course had our Junior Play, "Indian Doll", which was
under the direction of Miss Helen Campbell.
At the end of this year we lost four more members: Gertrude Cushman, who was
our class president for three years, moved to Plumwood; Ronald Smith and Roy Burdette
joined the army; and Edna Evans got married.
We've had three different class advisors, Mrs. Hacker for our Freshman Year,
Miss Campbell for our Sophomore and Junior Years, and now Mr. Souders for our
Senior Year.
Well, we finally made it! There are only five of us girls left now. We have had
quite a time during our high school days. Our Senior Play will be an event of April.
Our one aim all through high school was to go to Mexico on our Senior Trip; we've
worked hard, and we hope to be there as soon as we graduate in May. Keep your fingers
crossed that we make it.
Class Prophecy of 1950
As we look into our magic crystal ball, we see five familiar faces.
First, we see Marilyn Bennett as the private secretary of John L. Lewis. At this
moment she is seated on John L's lap preparing for another sitdown strike. Her
secretarial career has kept the wedding bells from ringing for her thus far.
Next appears Mrs. F. D. Roosevelt Jr., formerly Bonnie Cantleberry. She and Nondus
aren't on speaking terms because of their political disagreements. The stork made a
mistake when he flew over the Roosevelt's home, for instead of dropping one child, he
dropped a bouncing set of triplets. The next morning the chimney was found on the ground.
As we leave Bonnie she is washing diapers.
Now the Ebennezer Snicklefritz family is seen. Mrs. Snicklefritz, the mother of
14 children, is the former Barbara Farris. Due to her great love of World History in
high school, she named her children as follows: Caesar, Cicero, Cleopatra, Homer,
Alexander, Hannibal, Xerxes, Romeo, Anthony, Shakespeare, Aristotle, Helena & Athena
(twins), and Olympia. She fully intended to get a college education, but Danny Cupid

interfered. All in all she says that they are very happy living in their small house

Now we arrive at the estate of the wealthy Admiral Arnold Hall. At the present
Mrs. Hall, the former Lois Luthi, is taking her daily goat's milk bath. They have no
children, but they have nine cats, three canaries, and two pair of love birds. Admiral
Hall is on his daily flight around the world in his jet plane which Lois gave him for
Christmas. Lois is happily married and says she owes her happiness to the fact that
she is constantly keeping herself young looking.
Whoops!! We almost forgot the most obvious of the Big Five, Mrs. Howard Hale,
now candidate for President on the Seniorcrat ticket. She is the former Nondus Miesse.
Besides the great competition of the F. D. R., she is keeping very busy trying to control Nondus Jr.
while making her campaign tours. As of now the Hales still reside in Galena, but plan
to move to Washington after the election.
Senior Class Will
We, the Senior Class of 1950, being of sound minds and memories, do hereby make,
publish, and declare this to be our last will and testament, hereby revoking any will or wills
heretofore made by us.
First. We, as a class, direct that all Juniors will become Seniors next year. In the
event that any of these Juniors do not live up to the reputations made and established by
the present Seniors, they will automatically be disinherited.
Next we will the cracks in the ceiling to the new school board. Since the custodian
couldn't use all of the gum under the seats willed to him by lasy year's Seniors, we will
what is left to the students. We will our attitude toward school life to anyone who thinks
he would like to quit school.
We Seniors also have individual possessions which we would like to will to the needy,
not the greedy.
I, Marilyn Bennett, will my musical ability to Judy Roff. I also will my weight to
Helen Campbell so she can stop dieting. Last, I will my ability not to pay attention in
class to Russell Stockwell.
I, Bonnie Cantleberry, will my naturally curly hair to Barbara Burdette. My quietness
goes to Betty Bolton, and my seat behind Harry Hughes goes to Ida Hartsook.
I, Barbara Farris, will to Myrt Bricker SOME of my weight. My tardiness goes to
Scott Mickle and my seat on the bus going to the basketball games to whoever will make
good use of it.
I, Lois Luthi, will my chewing ability to Mr. Hoke. I also will my Roamin' ability
to Dick Moore. My blue eyes I will to Nancy Brown.
I, Nondus Miesse, will my mischievousness to Dave Meloy and hope he puts it to good
use. I will my perfect attendance to three Sophomore basketball players and my freckles
go to whoever wants them.

The graduating class of 1951 began its Junior Year with twelve members.
Our first activity of the year was choosing our Junior Play. We finally decided
upon "Spooky Tavern", a mystery-farce.
We elected our officers and they are as follows: Nancy Brown, president;
David Meloy, vice-president; and Betty Bolton, Secretary-treasurer.
Next came the Hallow'en Carnival. We chose as our candidate for queen,
Dayna Bricker. Our class had bingo and the fun house.
We presented our play, which was directed by Helen Campbell, on November 10.
We had a turkey and duck raffle during November.
Then we sold programs at the Galena-Sunbury game.
Thus ended the Junior year of the graduating class of 1951.
